Combine whole wheat flour, oats, cornmeal, flaxseed meal, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda in a large bowl. Mix until well incorporated. Next, add buttermilk and egg to the mixture, stirring gently just until a smooth consistency is achieved.

Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly spray the surface with cooking spray for non-stick performance. Using a large spoon, drop generous portions of the batter onto the preheated griddle. Cook for several minutes or until bubbles start to form on the surface and the edges of the batter begin to dry.
