Vanilla Custard Sauce

  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine egg yolks, heavy cream, granulated sugar, and Cointreau or other orange-flavored liqueur in a small saucepan. Whisk until the mixture is well combined and smooth.

Put the saucepan over medium-low heat and cook, stirring constantly with a silicone spatula to prevent scratching the pan, until the mixture is warm and has thickened slightly, 8-10 minutes.

Take the saucepan off the heat source, strain it to remove any cooked egg particles that may have formed during cooking, and let it cool down.
