Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 medium onions, minced
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 cup milk
- 2 slices Texas toast thick-sliced bread
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1 tablespoon hot chutney
- 1/2 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon apricot jam
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 large egg
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions
1
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 175 degrees Celsius). Next, lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with oil to prevent sticking.
2
In a large skillet, heat some oil over medium-high heat. Sauté sliced onions until they become soft and translucent, taking about 2 to 3 minutes.
3
Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until it's browned, stirring occasionally. This should take around 8 to 10 minutes.
4
In a separate dish, combine milk and pour it over bread slices. Soak the bread in the milk for a few minutes, then gently squeeze out any excess liquid.
5
Add the soaked bread to the beef mixture and stir in some dried fruit, chutney, curry powder, apricot jam, salt, and black pepper.
6
Pour the beef mixture into your prepared baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
7
In a small bowl, whisk together some reserved milk, an egg, and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture over the top of the beef mixture.
8
Place a bay leaf on top of the milk mixture to add some extra flavor. Continue baking until the top is golden brown, taking about 25 to 30 minutes.
9
Remove the bay leaf before serving and enjoy your dish.
