Ingredients
- 1 (.25 ounce) package instant yeast
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1/2 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
- 1/2 cup hot milk
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 egg
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 tablespoon raisins for decorating
Instructions
1
Start by combining yeast and sugar in a small bowl, then slowly pour in warm water. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy and creamy.
2
Next, heat milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a boiling point and bubbles. Remove the saucepan from the heat source, then add butter and stir until it's fully incorporated and melted. Let the mixture cool down to a lukewarm temperature.
3
In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with the cooled milk mixture. Add an egg and 2 cups of flour to the bowl, then mix everything together until it's well combined. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of flour, stirring after each addition to ensure it's fully incorporated. When the dough starts to come together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it's smooth and pliable. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes.
4
Divide the dough into seven equal pieces: one round piece that's about 2 inches in diameter, five smaller round pieces that are each about 1 inch in diameter, and the remaining dough in one large round piece. Place the large round piece on a lightly greased cookie sheet and flatten it slightly. Use four of the 1-inch round pieces to create 'feet' for your turtle, and one piece to create a 'tail'. Use the 2-inch round piece to create a 'head' for your turtle. Attach each piece by flattening the end that attaches to the body and pinching it under the turtle's 'body'. Use a little water to moisten the end, then press it into place. Finally, use raisins to create 'eyes' for your turtle's head.
5
Cover the turtle with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.
6
While the turtle is rising, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
7
Use a sharp knife to make crisscross cuts in the turtle's body, creating the 'hell'. Then, use scissors to cut a small slit at the bottom of the turtle's mouth.
8
Bake the turtle in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until it's golden brown.
