Traditional Irish Soda Bread without Buttermilk
Ingredients
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1
Combine milk and vinegar in a small bowl; permit to coagulate, approximately 10 minutes.
2
Simultaneously, preheat the oven to a high temperature of 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly coat a baking sheet with a thin layer of oil.
3
Mix flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl; gradually incorporate soured milk into the mixture until it forms a cohesive mass. Transfer the dough to a surface dusted with flour; knead gently and shape into a circular form.
4
Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet. Make an 'X' cut through the center of the dough to facilitate steam release and maintain its rounded shape during baking.
5
Bake in the preheated oven until it reaches a golden brown color and the bottom of the loaf produces a hollow sound when tapped, approximately 45 minutes.
