Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread
Ingredients
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the highest temperature setting, which is 425 degrees F (or equivalently, 220 degrees C).
2
Next, lightly coat two baking sheets with a thin layer of cooking spray or oil to prevent the bread from sticking.
3
Mix together two types of flour - whole wheat and bread, along with some rolled oats, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Combine these ingredients until they are well blended.
4
Now, gently incorporate buttermilk into the mixture until a soft, pliable dough forms. Be careful not to overmix or knead the dough too vigorously.
5
Divide this dough into four equal portions and shape each portion into a rounded, flat loaf. Use a marker to mark each loaf with an "X" for easy identification.
6
Place these loaves on the prepared baking sheets and bake in the preheated oven until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom, taking around 30 to 45 minutes.
