Combine a sliced onion with equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and white vinegar, along with salt and sugar, in a saucepan over high heat; bring the mixture to a rolling boil.

Remove the saucepan from the heat source and let it sit for 20 minutes, allowing the onion to become soft and translucent.

After 20 minutes, allow the saucepan to cool down completely for at least 30 minutes.

Once cooled, carefully pour out the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the onion solids.
