Sweet and Sour Orange Chicken
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary ingredients before commencing the recipe.
2
Combine water, rice vinegar, lemon juice, soy sauce, and orange juice in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in brown sugar, green onion, orange zest, ginger, garlic, and pepper flakes until they are fully incorporated; bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, and allow it to cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
3
Transfer the chicken into a resealable plastic bag. Pour in 1 cup of cooled sauce, ensuring the chicken is fully submerged. Seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Reserve any remaining sauce for later use.
4
In another resealable plastic bag, combine flour, salt, and pepper. Mix these dry ingredients until well combined.
5
Once the chicken has finished marinating, remove it from the marinade and place into a new bag containing the seasoned flour. Seal the bag, and give it a vigorous shake to coat the chicken evenly.
6
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the chicken in the hot skillet until it develops a golden-brown color on both sides.
7
Transfer the cooked chicken to a paper towel-lined plate, cover it with aluminum foil, and wipe out the skillet.
8
Pour any reserved sauce into the skillet, bringing it to a boil over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, mix together cornstarch and water until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Stir this mixture into the boiling sauce.
9
Reduce the heat to medium-low, add the cooked chicken, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until it is fully cooked through, approximately 5 minutes.
10
Serve the chicken over rice and enjoy your meal!
