  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root

Boil a substantial container of salted water until it reaches its highest temperature. Cook Chinese broccoli in this boiling water, without covering the container, until the vegetables are slightly soft and still crisp, approximately 4 minutes. Transfer the broccoli to a shallow serving dish.

Combine hoisin sauce, sugar, soy sauce, cornstarch, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger in a small cooking vessel over medium heat until the sauce thickens and loses its hazy appearance, 5 to 7 minutes. Pour this sauce over the broccoli; mix well to evenly coat and present.
