Stuffed Ukrainian Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients
  • 1 medium head cabbage
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked white rice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 (46 fluid ounce) can tomato juice
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the desired temperature of 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, take a moment to prepare your cooking vessel by greasing it with a suitable lubricant.
3
In another part of the kitchen, fill a large container with a moderate amount of water and insert a specialized steaming device. Bring the water to a rolling boil, then carefully place the entire head of cabbage into the steaming device. Cover it and allow the cabbage to become tender, taking around 10 to 12 minutes.
4
Simultaneously, bring a substantial quantity of water to a boil in a separate cooking vessel. Introduce rice into the mixture and gradually reduce the heat level. Cover the container and allow the rice to become tender, absorbing all of the available water in the process. This should take approximately 20 minutes.
5
In a small cooking pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add an onion and cook until it becomes translucent, taking about 5 minutes to achieve this state. Combine the cooked onion with the rice and season with salt and pepper according to your personal preference.
6
Proceed by cutting off the leaves of the cabbage, then halving any particularly large leaves. Spoon a small amount of rice into each leaf and roll it tightly, forming a compact package. Stack these packages in layers within the prepared casserole dish.
7
Pour just enough tomato juice over the cabbage rolls to cover them, taking care not to overflow.
8
Finally, place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 2 hours.
