Ingredients
- 2 small carrots
- 2 1/8 cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, diced
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 1/4 pounds rump roast, cubed
- 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 onion, chopped
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
1
First, preheat your oven to a high temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit or 230 degrees Celsius.
2
Next, place the carrots in a small saucepan and submerge them in water. Bring the water to a rolling boil, then cook until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork, approximately 10 minutes. Allow the carrots to cool down before slicing them.
3
While the carrots are cooking, combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and sift them together until well mixed. Add the butter to the mixture and rub it with your fingers until you achieve a coarse crumb consistency. Gradually add water to the mixture, stirring continuously.
4
If the dough becomes too sticky during this process, you can add a little more flour to achieve the right consistency.
5
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to an even thickness of about 1/4 inch. Use a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass to cut out six circles, approximately 5 inches in diameter. Be careful not to stretch the dough while cutting it out.
6
Meanwhile, prepare the filling by mixing together the meat, carrots, potatoes, and onion in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper to your liking.
7
Cover half of each pastry base with the prepared filling. Moisten the edges of the pastry and fold them over the filling to seal it tightly.
8
Use a fork to press the edges together, making sure they are securely sealed. Transfer the raw pasties to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush the tops with milk, and make a small slit in each top to allow steam to escape.
9
Bake the pasties in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius and continue baking for an additional 35 minutes.
