Ingredients
- 1/4 pound bacon, chopped
- 1 pound split peas, rinsed
- 1/3 (20 ounce) package frozen southern-style hash brown potatoes (such as Ore Ida®)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 ribs celery, diced
- 3 carrots, peeled and diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes, or more to taste
- 8 cups chicken broth
Instructions
1
Begin by placing the bacon in a substantial skillet and heat it over a moderately high temperature, stirring periodically until it develops a light brown color, approximately 5 minutes. Transfer the cooked bacon to a paper towel-lined plate for further use.
2
Next, combine the cooked bacon with split peas, diced hash brown potatoes, chopped onion, sliced celery, grated carrots, minced garlic, black pepper, and red pepper flakes in a slow cooker. Pour the chicken broth over the ingredients and mix well.
3
Proceed with cooking the mixture on Low for 8 hours or High for 6 hours.
