Spicy Tomato Soup
Ingredients
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black mustard seed
  • 5 fresh curry leaves
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed, freshly ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 pinches ground dried turmeric
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons tamarind paste
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
1
Preheat the saucepan over medium heat by heating the oil in it. Once hot, introduce the mustard seeds into the saucepan and wait for them to start popping, which signals that they're ready. Next, add the curry leaves and chopped tomato into the saucepan. Then, sprinkle in the cumin, black pepper, red chili flakes, turmeric, and minced garlic to give it a rich flavor.
2
Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching. Now, add the tamarind paste and adjust its concentration according to your preference. Season with salt to taste, making sure the flavors are balanced.
3
Allow the mixture to simmer for approximately 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
4
Spoon the sauce into bowls and garnish with chopped cilantro for a visually appealing presentation. You can enjoy it as a soup or serve it alongside steaming hot rice.
