Spicy Southwest Falafel
Ingredients
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 (1.25 ounce) package dry taco seasoning mix
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons peanut oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 (16 ounce) can pinto beans, drained
  • 1 dash hot sauce, or to taste
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs, or more as needed
Instructions
1
Preheat the cooking vessel by heating a substantial amount of vegetable oil in a deep-frying device or large cooking pot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
2
Combine the onion, green bell pepper, egg, garlic, taco seasoning, baking powder, peanut oil, cumin, salt, and cayenne pepper in a food processor. Process until the ingredients are well-blended.
3
Add pinto beans to the mixture and continue processing until the pinto beans are finely chopped and evenly distributed, but still retain some texture.
4
Transfer the bean mixture to a large container; mix in hot sauce until it is fully incorporated.
5
Add sufficient bread crumbs to the mixture to create a cohesive dough that holds its shape without becoming excessively sticky.
6
Shape the dough into small, quarter-sized balls.
7
Fry the falafel in hot oil until they are a deep brown color, approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
