  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 3/4 cup frozen mixed vegetables

Heat a substantial amount of oil in a large cooking vessel over an intermediate temperature and sauté the onions until they become soft and fragrant, but not caramelized. Thoroughly rinse the rice several times to remove any impurities and drain it well. Add the cooked rice to the pan with the onions, then pour in 2 cups of water and stir in salt, a blend of spices known as garam masala, and the vegetables. Cover the pan with a lid and elevate the heat to a high level.

Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then decrease the heat to a low simmer, ensuring that the rice remains covered throughout the cooking process. After approximately 10 minutes of cooking, gently stir the rice to ensure an even distribution of flavors and spices. Continue cooking for 25-30 minutes, or until all the water has evaporated and the rice is tender and fluffy.
