Ingredients
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 onions, diced
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chile powder
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 2 cups diced tomatoes
- 2 1/4 cups basmati rice
- 3 cups water
Instructions
1
Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat, allowing it to warm up before adding the ingredients. Cook and stir the sliced onions until they turn golden brown, a process that can take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. Add the necessary seasonings including salt, garlic powder, chili powder, grated ginger, and turmeric. Stir the mixture to coat everything evenly.
2
Next, add the chopped tomatoes to the onion mixture and continue cooking and stirring until the tomatoes start breaking down and releasing their juices, which can take around 5 to 10 minutes.
3
Now, add the rice to the onion-tomato mixture and pour in the required amount of water. Bring the entire mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a lid. Allow it to simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until the rice is tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, a process that can take 15 to 20 minutes.
