Spiced Scandinavian Wine

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 (3 inch) cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds

Combine a generous amount of water with granulated sugar, whole cloves, ground cinnamon, and plump raisins in a substantial cooking vessel. Place the mixture over high heat and bring it to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and carefully add in the wine, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and orange juice. Allow the mixture to warm through, but avoid letting it boil vigorously. Next, carefully remove the cinnamon stick from the pot and proceed to portion out the warm liquid mixture into individual serving cups. Finally, garnish each cup with a sprinkle of sliced almonds and a few boiled raisins for added texture and flavor.
