Ingredients
- 1 recipe pastry for double-crust pie
- 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 cups water
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1
Gather all necessary ingredients beforehand.
2
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
3
Butter a 9x13-inch baking pan thoroughly.
4
Roll out the pastry dough into a large rectangle measuring 24 inches by 16 inches on a lightly floured surface.
5
Cut the dough into six equal-sized squares, each measuring 8 inches by 8 inches.
6
Place a single apple on top of each pastry square, positioning the cored opening facing upwards.
7
Cut the butter into 8 individual pieces; place one piece in the center of each apple's cored opening, reserving the remaining butter for later use.
8
Distribute the brown sugar evenly among the apples, poking some of it inside each cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple.
9
Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples for added flavor.
10
Using your fingertips, moisten them slightly and bring one corner of each pastry square up to the top of the apple, then bring the opposite corner to the top and press together firmly.
11
Bring up the two remaining corners, sealing them tightly around the apple.
12
Gently pinch the dough at the sides to ensure a complete seal of the apple within the pastry.
13
Repeat this process with the remaining apples and place them in the prepared baking dish.
14
To prepare the sauce, combine water, white sugar, vanilla extract, and the reserved butter in a large saucepan.
15
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
16
Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the sugar is fully dissolved, approximately 5 minutes.
17
Carefully pour the sauce over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.
18
Bake the apple dumplings in the preheated oven until they are golden brown and crispy on top, taking around 50 to 60 minutes.
19
Place each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl and spoon some of the sauce over the top.
