Southern Slugburger
Ingredients
  • 7 slices potato bread
  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
  • 6 hamburger buns, split
  • 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup dill pickle slices, or to taste
  • 1 pinch chili powder, or to taste
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
Instructions
1
Acquire the necessary components for preparation.
2
Preheat your oven to 175 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius). Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3
Remove the crusts from the bread slices and position them on the prepared baking sheet.
4
Bake in the center of your preheated oven until it reaches a dry and toasted state, approximately 45 minutes.
5
Transfer the toasted bread to a bowl in a food processor and process until you achieve coarse crumbs.
6
Combine ground chuck, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl. Add the bread crumbs and mix using your fingers to break apart the meat.
7
Dampen your fingers with water and shape the mixture into hamburger patties.
8
Heat ¼ to ½ inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place a patty into the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Cook until well browned and crusty, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining patties, adding more oil if necessary.
9
Serve the cooked hamburgers on hamburger buns with mustard and pickles; sprinkle a pinch of chili powder or cayenne on top, if desired.
