Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup honey
- 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 eggs, divided
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 8 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary ingredients beforehand.
2
Combine warm water with a generous amount of yeast in a large bowl; allow the mixture to sit until it becomes soft and forms a creamy foam, approximately 5 minutes.
3
Add honey, oil, two eggs, and salt to the bowl; mix well. Gradually incorporate flour, one cup at a time, blending after each addition until the dough comes together.
4
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth and elastic.
5
Place the dough in a large, lightly-oiled bowl and ensure it is well-coated.
6
Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise in a warm environment until it has doubled in volume, roughly 1 ½ hours.
7
Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide it in half and knead each portion for 5 minutes or until it becomes smooth; add flour as needed to maintain a suitable consistency.
8
Divide each half into thirds and shape them into long, thin snakes approximately 1 ½ inches in diameter.
9
Join the three snakes together firmly at their ends and create a braid, either leaving it as is or shaping it into a round loaf by bringing the ends together and curving the braid into a circle; secure with a pinch.
10
Prepare two baking trays by greasing them and place the finished braid or round loaf on each; cover with a towel and allow it to rise for about 1 hour.
11
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) before baking.
12
Brush a generous amount of beaten egg over each braid; sprinkle with poppy seeds for added flavor.
13
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, approximately 40 minutes.
14
Allow the finished braid to cool on a wire rack for at least one hour before serving.
15
Serve and enjoy your delicious creation!
