Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- food coloring
- 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
- 1 (16 ounce) container vanilla frosting
- 12 black licorice whips
Instructions
1
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Next, spray a 2 1/2- to 3-quart oven-safe bowl with cooking spray, making sure it's evenly coated.
2
In a separate bowl, combine granulated sugar and add black food coloring until you achieve the desired shade. Set this mixture aside for now.
3
Follow the package instructions to prepare the cake batter. Pour the prepared batter into your prepared bowl and bake in a preheated oven until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
4
After removing the cake from the oven, let it cool for 15 minutes in the bowl before transferring it to a flat surface. Allow the cake to cool completely, which should take around 30 more minutes.
5
Once the cake is fully cooled, use a serrated knife to level off one flat side of the cake. Place the cake onto a cake stand or board, and then use the same knife to trim any excess edges into a rounded shape.
6
Next, apply a generous amount of frosting all over the cake. Using a toothpick, draw a geometric shape in the center top of the cake - specifically, a pentagon. Surround this shape with five identical hexagons, repeating the pattern over the entire cake.
7
Finally, use black licorice cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces to cover any visible lines. Fill the pentagon shapes with white sugar that has been colored black, creating a visually appealing design.
