  • 5 cups yams, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup salted butter, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Preheat your slow cooker by placing a slow cooker liner inside or spraying it with cooking spray to prevent food from sticking.

Add the yams to the slow cooker, followed by a generous amount of water. Next, sprinkle brown sugar, pineapple juice, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg evenly over the yams. Mix everything together to create a uniform sauce.

Place the slow cooker on Low and let it cook for 2 hours. After this initial cooking time, remove the lid and gently stir the contents.

To thicken the sauce, mix cornstarch with a small amount of water in a separate bowl until you get a smooth paste. Then, add this slurry to the slow cooker and stir it in thoroughly.

Continue cooking until the yams are tender enough to be pierced with a fork, and the sauce has reached your desired consistency. This should take approximately 1 hour more.
