Ingredients
- 14 cups water, divided
- 2 cups dried pinto beans
- 1 ham bone with meat
- 1 large red onion, chopped
- 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ham base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
- 1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or to taste
- 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
1
Begin by filling a massive container with 8 cups of water and pinto beans. Place the pot over high heat, bringing the mixture to a rolling boil. Next, take the pot off the stovetop and cover it with a lid. Allow the mixture to sit for 1 hour, undisturbed. After this time has passed, carefully pour off the water and rinse the beans with fresh water.
2
Transfer the pinto beans to a slow cooker, along with a ham bone, an onion, and some garlic. Pour in the remaining 6 cups of water, making sure that the beans are completely submerged.
3
Place the slow cooker on Low and let it cook for 8 hours, or until the beans are tender. Once they're done, remove the ham bone and shred the remaining meat. Return the shredded ham to the beans and discard the bone.
4
Finally, serve the hot beans, seasoned with a dash of hot sauce, some salt, and pepper.
