Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 6 pounds ground beef
- 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 3 (26.5 ounce) cans Sloppy Joe sauce (such as Manwich®)
- 5 ribs celery, chopped
- 1 large green bell pepper, chopped
- 5 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions
1
Preheat the skillet over high heat and add 1 tablespoon of oil, stirring until it melts.
2
Add approximately one-third of the beef to the skillet along with half a cup of sliced onion and a minced clove of garlic.
3
Sprinkle salt and pepper over the ingredients to enhance flavor, then continue cooking until the mixture is nicely browned and crumbly.
4
Transfer this mixture to a slow cooker, taking care not to overfill it.
5
Repeat the process of adding oil, beef, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper to the skillet twice more, utilizing the remaining ingredients.
6
Pour Sloppy Joe sauce over the beef mixture in the slow cooker, followed by the addition of chopped celery and green pepper.
7
Add a spoonful of brown sugar to balance out the flavors, along with cider vinegar and whole cloves.
8
Place the slow cooker on Low and let it cook for at least 4 hours, periodically tasting and adjusting the seasoning to suit your preferences.
