Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1/3 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1
Start by mixing sugar and yeast in a small bowl, adding it to warm water. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and creamy.
2
Next, combine the yeast mixture with flour in a large bowl. Make sure to stir everything together thoroughly. Gradually add small amounts of water, one tablespoon at a time, until the entire amount of flour is well incorporated. When the dough starts to come together and hold its shape, transfer it onto a lightly dusted surface and give it a brief kneading session for approximately 1 minute.
3
To prepare the dough for rising, lightly grease a large bowl and place the dough inside. Make sure it's evenly coated with oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm environment until it has doubled in size, taking around 30 minutes.
4
Before baking the focaccia, preheat your oven to a high temperature of 475 degrees F (245 degrees C). Once the oven is ready, deflate the dough and transfer it onto a lightly floured surface. Give it another brief kneading session. Roll or pat the dough into a flat sheet and place it on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush the dough with oil and sprinkle some salt on top.
5
Finally, bake the focaccia in the preheated oven for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your desired level of crispiness. If you prefer a moist and fluffy focaccia, bake it for 10 minutes. However, if you prefer a crunchier exterior and a darker crust, bake it for 20 minutes.
