Sicilian Meatloaf
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 8 thin slices deli ham, or as needed
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese, or as needed
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 dash soy sauce
Instructions
1
First, preheat the oven to a high temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 175 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, place an enormous sheet of parchment paper on a flat surface for preparation.
3
Then, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onion soup mix, barbecue sauce, minced garlic, egg, flour, and black pepper in a bowl until everything is perfectly blended.
4
After that, transfer the meat mixture to the parchment paper and press it into a long, narrow rectangle shape measuring 10 inches wide by 16 inches long.
5
Following that, layer sliced ham on top of the meat mixture, leaving a small border around all sides to prevent it from touching.
6
Next, sprinkle shredded Swiss cheese over the ham slices for added flavor.
7
Then, use the parchment paper to carefully lift up one edge of the meat rectangle and gently roll it over the filling, making sure the edges are sealed tightly.
8
After that, transfer the rolled meatloaf to a 9x13-inch baking dish and discard the parchment paper.
9
Finally, bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
10
Meanwhile, mix together ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and soy sauce in a bowl until the sugar is fully dissolved.
11
Next, remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the ketchup mixture evenly over the top.
12
Return the meatloaf to the oven and continue baking until the beef is no longer pink in the center, approximately 15 more minutes.
13
At this point, use a meat thermometer to check if the beef has reached an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit (or 70 degrees Celsius).
