Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 4 cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 4 eggs
- 12 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla sugar, or vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
Instructions
1
Combine yeast and water in a large bowl, allowing the mixture to sit for 5 minutes. This will enable the yeast to dissolve and become active. Introduce salt, sugar, oil, and 4 eggs into the bowl, stirring until everything is harmoniously combined. Gradually incorporate flour into the mixture until it reaches a suitable consistency. When the dough becomes difficult to stir, transfer it onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes. Alternatively, place the dough in the bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise until it has doubled in size.
2
Once the dough is ready, punch it down and divide it into 6 or 8 equal portions. It's customary to remove a small piece from each portion as an act of kindness, in accordance with Jewish tradition. Shape the dough into ropes and then braid them together to form two loaves or a single, larger braid. If your oven is large enough, you can create the desired shape without compromising on size.
3
To prepare for baking, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining egg, water, and vanilla sugar. Brush this mixture over the tops of your loaves to add a touch of flavor and moisture. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for added texture.
4
Bake your loaves in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until they have reached a deep golden brown color. While the loaves are baking, wrap the small piece of dough that was removed earlier in aluminum foil and bake it alongside its companions as a gesture of gratitude.
