Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups chopped hickory smoked ham
- 1/2 cup grated Cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 190 degrees Celsius).
2
To begin, grease a large baking vessel with melted butter.
3
In a medium-sized pan over moderate heat, melt the same amount of butter used earlier.
4
Add sliced onions to the pan and stir constantly until they start to soften, taking approximately 3-4 minutes.
5
Mix in a small amount of flour and continue to cook until the mixture turns golden brown, roughly 2 minutes later.
6
Next, combine half-and-half and milk in the pan, whisking continuously until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency, taking an additional 3-4 minutes.
7
Remove the pan from heat and season with salt and pepper to taste.
8
Add a pinch of garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and paprika to the sauce for added flavor.
9
Place half of the sliced potatoes into the prepared baking dish, followed by 3/4 cup of diced ham.
10
Sprinkle a quarter cup of Cheddar cheese and a quarter cup of Monterey Jack cheese over the ham.
11
Pour half of the sauce from the pan into the baking dish, before repeating the layering process with the remaining potatoes, 3/4 cup of ham, 1/4 cup of Cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup of Monterey Jack cheese, and the remaining sauce.
12
Cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent overcooking.
13
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, before removing the foil and continuing to bake until the cheese is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling, taking an additional 20-30 minutes.
