Ingredients
- 3/4 cup uncooked basmati rice
- 5 cups water
- 1/4 cup butter
- 3 pounds sweet onions, coarsely chopped
- 1 cup half-and-half cream
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese, divided
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the desired temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius.
2
Next, take a 2-quart baking dish and apply butter to it in order to prevent sticking during the cooking process.
3
In a large saucepan, bring water to a rolling boil and then add rice. Stir the mixture well and gradually decrease the heat to a low setting, allowing it to simmer until it reaches half-cooked status after approximately 5 minutes.
4
Drain the cooked rice and set it aside for further use.
5
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook them until they become translucent but not browned, taking around 8 minutes to achieve this.
6
Mix the cooked onions with butter in the skillet and then combine it with the previously cooked rice. Add half-and-half, salt, and 1 3/4 cups of Swiss cheese to the mixture.
7
Transfer the combined mixture to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of Swiss cheese on top.
8
Bake the dish uncovered in the preheated oven until the rice is tender and the top is lightly browned, taking approximately 1 hour to complete.
