Ingredients
- 2 bunches collard greens
- 2 bunches mustard greens
- 2 bunches turnip greens
- 4 cups chicken broth, divided
- 3 tablespoons salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup cooked real bacon bits
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 4 cloves garlic, sliced
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1
Rinse collard, mustard, and turnip greens thoroughly to remove any unwanted debris. Discard the stems as they are not edible.
2
Next, submerge the cleaned greens in a warm water bath to cleanse them of any dirt or sediment. Fill a clean sink with lukewarm water and add 2 cups of chicken broth, stirring until it's well combined. Let the greens soak in this mixture for 10 minutes.
3
After soaking, transfer the greens to a colander and allow them to drain; do not rinse them with water. Dispose of the chicken broth mixture down the drain.
4
In a large pot, pour in the remaining 2 cups of chicken broth and add the greens. Combine them well.
5
Add vegetable oil, bacon bits, sugar, garlic, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
6
Once boiling, reduce the heat to a low simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender, taking approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
