Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon shortening
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 2 cups sliced onion
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 (4 ounce) can mushrooms, drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 4 potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
Instructions
1
Heat the shortening in a large skillet over medium-high heat, causing it to melt and become fluid. Introduce the ground beef into the skillet and cook, utilizing a spoon or spatula to break it down into smaller pieces, until it is uniformly browned. Combine the onion and garlic in the skillet with the ground beef; continue to cook until they are tender. Remove any excess fat from the mixture, and incorporate the flour, salt, pepper, sugar, basil, cinnamon, and oregano into it. Add the mushrooms and tomato sauce to the mixture, stirring until well combined; then let it simmer for 15 minutes over low heat.
2
Concurrently, prepare the potatoes by placing them in a microwave-safe container or dish. Cook the potatoes for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring them occasionally, until they are roughly halfway cooked.
3
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Position a 9x13 inch baking dish or shallow casserole dish of comparable size at the bottom. Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish, followed by half of the meat sauce and half of the cheese. Repeat this process, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.
4
Bake the dish in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is browned.
