Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 1 (3 pound) package frozen dinner rolls (such as RhodesĀ®)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 head cabbage, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 1/2 quarts vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven by placing the 13x18-inch rimmed baking sheet inside and spraying it with cooking spray.
2
Place frozen dinner rolls on the prepared baking sheet and cover them with sprayed plastic wrap. Allow them to thaw and rise for 3 to 5 hours, or until they have doubled in size.
3
About 45 minutes prior to the dough's completion of rising, heat a tablespoon of oil in a large cooking vessel over medium-high heat.
4
Add ground beef to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until it is browned and crumbly, approximately 5 minutes.
5
Add an onion to the pot and cook until it becomes soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
6
Introduce cabbage into the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until it is softened, around 10 minutes.
7
Season with salt and pepper to taste, then spread the mixture onto a rimmed baking sheet. Allow it to cool until the dough is ready, 20 to 30 minutes.
8
Heat a substantial amount of oil in a deep-fryer or electric skillet to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
9
During this time, prepare the filling by flattening a dinner roll with your hands or a rolling pin.
10
Place several tablespoons of the cooled cabbage mixture into the center of the flattened dough.
11
Fold the dough edges over the filling and pinch to seal it, repeating this process with the remaining rolls and filling.
12
Fry bierocks in hot oil until they are golden brown, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes per side.
13
Drain the fried bierocks on paper towels and serve hot
