Ingredients
- 1 pound sausage, casings removed
- 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
- 10 cups cubed, day-old bread
- 8 eggs, beaten
- 3 cups whole milk
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1 1/2 cups cubed Black Forest ham
- 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons mustard powder
- 2 teaspoons butter, melted
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1
Prepare a 9x13-inch casserole dish generously with cooking spray or oil.
2
Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the sausage until it's fully broken down and has a rich, dark color, taking around 10 minutes.
3
Transfer the cooked sausage to the prepared casserole dish.
4
In the same skillet, cook and stir the mushrooms over medium heat until they release their liquid and turn a light brown color, which should take about 5 to 10 minutes; drain the excess moisture.
5
Combine the cooked mushrooms, bread, eggs, milk, Cheddar cheese, diced ham, spinach, flour, dry mustard, melted butter, and basil in a large bowl; pour the mixture over the sausage. Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight.
6
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
7
Bake in the preheated oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, taking around 60 to 70 minutes.
