Ingredients
- 16 Boston Bibb or butter lettuce leaves
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 2 teaspoons minced pickled ginger
- 1 dash Asian chile pepper sauce, or to taste
- 1 (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, drained and finely chopped
- 1 bunch green onions, chopped
- 2 teaspoons Asian (dark) sesame oil
Instructions
1
Clean and prepare whole lettuce leaves by gently rinsing them under cold water, then patting them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Set the lettuce aside for later use.
2
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat to create a sizzling surface. Add the beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a browned and crumbly state, typically taking 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and transfer it to a separate bowl, discarding any excess grease that may have accumulated.
3
Next, add the onion to the same skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until it becomes just tender, usually within 5 to 7 minutes.
4
Now, combine the hoisin sauce, garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, and chile pepper sauce in the skillet. Stir until these ingredients are well incorporated into a smooth mixture.
5
Add water chestnuts, green onions, sesame oil, and the cooked beef to the skillet. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the onions just begin to wilt and lose their crunch, approximately 2 minutes.
6
Arrange the prepared lettuce leaves around the outer edge of a large serving platter. Spoon the beef mixture in the center, creating a visually appealing arrangement.
