Ingredients
- 2 pounds sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 apple, diced
- cooking spray
- 1/2 pound bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 1/2 pounds kielbasa sausage, cut into 1-inch thick slices
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary components.
2
Combine sauerkraut, caraway seeds, brown sugar, and apple in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil, then decrease the heat to a low simmer. Continue cooking for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
3
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
4
Place bacon and onion into a skillet over medium heat, and cook until the bacon is almost crispy and the onion begins to develop a golden brown color, approximately 10 minutes.
5
Stir the bacon mixture into the sauerkraut to combine.
6
Brown kielbasa sausage in any remaining bacon grease from the skillet, stirring occasionally until the sausage starts to develop a rich brown color, 10 to 15 minutes.
7
Stir the cooked sausage into the sauerkraut mixture.
8
Spoon the combined sauerkraut and sausage mixture into the prepared baking dish.
9
Bake in the preheated oven until it starts to bubble and emit a savory aroma, approximately 1 hour.
