Ingredients
- 1 cup soft bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
- 3 tablespoons steak sauce, (e.g. Heinz 57)
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- ground black pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup steak sauce, or more to taste
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a medium-high temperature of 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2
Next, lightly coat an 8x4-inch loaf pan with a thin layer of oil or cooking spray to prevent the bread from sticking.
3
In a small bowl, whisk together some stale breadcrumbs and milk until they form a smooth paste; set this mixture aside to allow it to soften slightly.
4
Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, diced bell pepper, steak sauce, beaten egg, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to mix these ingredients together until they form a cohesive mixture.
5
Add the bread crumb mixture from earlier to the large bowl and continue to mix everything together until it's just combined.
6
Use your hands to shape the mixture into a loaf shape, pressing it firmly into the prepared 8x4-inch loaf pan.
7
Brush the top of the loaf with a generous amount of steak sauce to add flavor and moisture.
8
Bake the loaf in your preheated oven until it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees F (70 degrees C) when checked with an instant-read thermometer, indicating it's no longer pink in the center. This should take about 1 hour.
9
Once the loaf is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
