Ingredients
- 3 quarts water
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
- 5 cups steel cut oats
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 2 pounds ground pork sausage
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup cooking oil
Instructions
1
Begin by filling a large, slow-cooking device with water and adding salt and pepper to bring it to a rolling boil. Next, add steel cut oats to the boiling water and stir well before covering the container and placing it on high heat for 90 minutes.
2
In a separate, large mixing vessel, combine ground beef, ground pork, and finely chopped onions. Mix everything together thoroughly before adding the oat mixture to the meat and onion combination. Then, reduce the heat of your slow-cooking device to low and cover it once again. Continue cooking for an additional 3 hours, stirring the mixture occasionally throughout this time.
3
Transfer the cooked oat and meat mixture to a medium-sized, oven-safe baking dish. Allow it to cool until it reaches a semi-solid consistency before carefully removing it from the dish and placing it onto wax paper. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or until it has reached a firm state.
4
Heat a generous amount of oil in a large, heavy frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully remove the refrigerated mixture from the refrigerator and cut it into thin slices. Cook each slice individually in the heated oil until they are evenly browned, flipping them as needed.
