Ingredients
- 6 cups prepared tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons Italian herb seasoning
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground veal
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1/3 cup finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
Instructions
1
Begin by adding a generous amount of tomato sauce to a large cooking vessel and heat it gently over medium temperature, allowing the sauce to come to a gentle simmer.
2
Reduce the heat to a low setting to keep the sauce warm while you prepare the meatballs.
3
Next, preheat your oven's broiler to a high temperature and position the oven rack approximately 6 inches away from the heat source. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly brush it with oil to prevent sticking.
4
In a small bowl, whisk together bread crumbs, milk, egg, Italian herb seasoning, olive oil, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes to create a smooth, thick mixture. Set this aside for now.
5
In a separate bowl, combine ground beef and veal to form a mixture. Add salt, black pepper, and white pepper, as well as some grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Pour the slurry mixture into this bowl and mix everything together until it's well combined.
6
Using a small portion scooper, shape the meat mixture into approximately 48 individual meatballs. Place these meatballs on the prepared baking sheet.
7
Place the meatballs under the preheated broiler and cook until they're nicely browned, taking about 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the meatballs over and continue broiling until they're browned on both sides and no longer pink in the center, adding an additional 3 to 4 minutes.
8
Carefully transfer the cooked meatballs to the stockpot with the simmering tomato sauce. Increase the heat to a medium setting and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or longer if you prefer your meatballs more cooked.
