Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups self-rising flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening (such as Crisco®)
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the highest temperature setting, which is 450 degrees Fahrenheit or 230 degrees Celsius.
2
In a large bowl, combine the flour and baking soda. Using a sifting motion with your hands or a whisk, mix these two ingredients together until they are evenly blended.
3
Next, use a pastry blender or two knives to work the shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Create a small indentation in the center of the mixture and pour buttermilk into it.
4
Using your hands, gently stir the mixture until a soft ball forms. Remove the dough from the bowl and transfer it to a lightly floured surface.
5
Knead the dough for 2 to 3 minutes, until it becomes smooth and pliable.
6
Roll the dough out into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle, making sure to maintain an even thickness.
7
Cut out 12 biscuits using a biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet, leaving enough space between each one.
8
Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until their tops are light brown and their sides begin to darken.
9
Once the biscuits have finished baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. This should take about 30 minutes.
