Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons rubbed sage
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 pinch dried thyme
- 1 (16 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1/3 cup orange marmalade
- 1 1/2 teaspoons honey
- 1 orange, peeled, sectioned, and cut into bite-size pieces
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to its optimal temperature, which is 325 degrees Fahrenheit or 165 degrees Celsius.
2
In a small bowl, mix together sage, salt, and thyme to create a fragrant blend. Apply half of the mixture evenly over the turkey's surface, then position it in a large roasting dish.
3
In a saucepan, combine butter, orange juice, marmalade, honey, and orange slices. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat before gradually reducing the heat and simmering uncovered until it thickens, stirring occasionally for 15 to 20 minutes. Introduce the remaining sage mixture into the saucepan and stir well.
4
Brush the turkey with the prepared glaze, reserving some for future basting. Place the turkey in the preheated oven and bake for 5 hours and 30 minutes, periodically basting with the leftover glaze.
5
Cover the turkey lightly with foil and continue baking until it reaches a safe internal temperature, indicated by an absence of pink color at the bone and clear juices. This process should take 30 minutes to 1 hour, with occasional brushing of the glaze.
6
Using a thermometer, check the turkey's internal temperature by inserting it into the thickest part of the thigh near the bone. The ideal reading should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit or 74 degrees Celsius.
7
Remove the turkey from the oven, cover it with a sheet of aluminum foil, and let it rest in a warm environment for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing.
