Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups cake flour
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup golden raisins, chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 recipe Williamsburg Butter Frosting
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or 175 degrees Celsius.
2
To prepare the baking vessel, lightly grease and dust it with flour to prevent cake from sticking. You can use a 9x13 inch rectangular pan, two 9-inch round cake pans, or three 8-inch round cake pans.
3
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients - cake flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
4
Next, combine softened butter, shortening, buttermilk, eggs, raisins, nuts, orange zest, and vanilla extract in the bowl.
5
Using an electric mixer, blend the ingredients together for 3 minutes on high speed to create a smooth batter.
6
Pour the prepared cake batter into your greased and floured baking vessel.
7
Place the cake in a preheated oven and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
8
For a 9x13 inch rectangular pan, bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until you have two layers. For round cake pans, bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
9
Once the cake is done baking, let it cool completely before frosting with Williamsburg Butter Frosting.
