Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup bread flour
- 2 teaspoons white sugar
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/4 cup margarine
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon buttermilk
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the desired temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 200 degrees Celsius.
2
Next, spray a shallow baking dish with cooking spray to prevent the dough from sticking.
3
Sift together both types of flour, 2 teaspoons sugar, salt, and baking soda in a bowl until well combined.
4
Add margarine to the dry ingredients and use a pastry blender or your fingers to cut it into small pieces until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
5
Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 2 cups of buttermilk and oil. Use a spatula to mix the ingredients until the dry mixture is evenly moistened.
6
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently knead it for approximately 1 minute.
7
Place the dough into the prepared baking pan and press down and around to form a round loaf shape.
8
Using your finger, cut a cross in the top of the loaf to allow steam to escape during baking.
9
Brush the top of the loaf with 1 tablespoon of buttermilk and sprinkle it with 1 teaspoon of sugar for a golden glaze.
10
Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
11
Reduce the heat to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius and rotate the pan before baking for an additional 30 minutes.
12
Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
