Ingredients
- 5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 (6 ounce) can mushrooms, drained
- 2 tablespoons butter, diced
Instructions
1
Firstly, preheat your oven to a temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 175 degrees Celsius for those using metric measurements).
2
Next, submerge the sliced potatoes in a medium-sized bowl that is partially filled with water.
3
In a separate, medium-sized saucepan, heat some oil over medium heat and add the ground beef, chopped onion, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste, then cook until the beef is evenly browned and the onions are tender, taking around 10 minutes to achieve this.
4
At the same time, prepare the cheese sauce. In a different, medium-sized saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Thoroughly mix in some flour to create a smooth paste, then gradually add milk while stirring constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens, approximately 5 minutes later. Finally, blend in some Cheddar cheese and season with salt and pepper to your liking.
5
Now, arrange half of the potato slices in a medium-sized baking dish. Pour the ground beef mixture into the dish, followed by some sliced mushrooms on top. Cover this with the cheese sauce mixture and finish off with the remaining potato slices. Dot the top of the dish with 2 tablespoons of butter.
6
Finally, place the dish in a preheated oven and bake until it is lightly browned, taking around 30 to 40 minutes.
