Ingredients
- 5 pounds McIntosh apples, chopped
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 (1 pint) canning jars with lids and rings, or as needed
Instructions
1
Begin by submerging the apples into a large container and covering them with water; bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Then, decrease the heat to a low setting and let it simmer, stirring occasionally, until the apples have lost their firmness, taking anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.
2
Next, preheat your oven to a temperature of 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
3
Now, take the apples and pass them through a food mill to separate the seeds, cores, and skin from the apple pulp. Transfer the pulp to a bowl and mix in white sugar, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg until well combined. Pour the apple mixture into a 9x13-inch baking pan.
4
Place the prepared apple mixture in the preheated oven and stir and scrape the sides every 20 to 30 minutes until the apple butter has turned a deep red color and achieved a thickened consistency, taking 2 to 4 hours.
5
Before filling the jars, sanitize them by submerging them in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Fill the hot, sterilized jars with apple butter, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Use a knife or thin spatula to remove any air bubbles that may have formed, and then wipe the rims of the jars with a damp paper towel to remove any remaining food residue. Secure the lids onto the jars and screw on the rings.
6
To ensure the jars are properly sealed, place a rack in the bottom of a large stockpot and fill it halfway with water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then carefully lower the jars into the boiling water using a holder, leaving about 2 inches of space between each jar. If necessary, add more boiling water to bring the level up to at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars. Cover the pot and process for 30 minutes.
7
Once the jars have cooled, place them on a cloth-covered or wood surface several inches apart until they are completely cool. Finally, press the top of each lid with your finger to ensure a tight seal; if the lid does not move up or down, you know it is secure. Store the sealed jars in a cool, dark area.
