Ingredients
- 5 pounds Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 splash water
Instructions
1
Begin by adding the apple pieces to a large, slow-cooking device. Next, combine white sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice into the slow-cooking device. Then, add vinegar and water, stirring everything together until it's well combined.
2
Now, cover the slow-cooking device and cook on high heat for 1 to 2 hours, or until the apples start to become tender and release their juices. After this initial cooking period, reduce the heat to low and continue cooking, uncovered, for an additional 5 to 6 hours. During this time, stir the mixture occasionally.
3
Using an electric blending device, puree the apple mixture until it's smooth. Then, continue cooking and stirring occasionally for another 4 hours or so, until the apple mixture has darkened in color and thickened to your liking.
4
If you prefer a smoother apple butter, you can pass it through a fine-mesh strainer before transferring it to an airtight container. Finally, seal the container and refrigerate the apple butter until it's cool to the touch.
