Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
- 2 tablespoons sausage drippings
- 2 tablespoons margarine
- 2 apples, cored and sliced
- 1 large onion, sliced
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 3 cups prepared mashed potatoes
- 1 tablespoon melted margarine
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the optimal temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (equivalent to 175 degrees Celsius).
2
To prevent food from sticking, lightly coat a 2-quart casserole dish with a non-stick substance.
3
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir Italian sausage until it reaches the desired level of browning, which should take around 10 minutes. Utilize a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked sausage to the prepared casserole dish.
4
Subsequently, drain excess liquid from the skillet and reserve 2 tablespoons of drippings in the same skillet.
5
Melt 2 tablespoons of margarine in a separate skillet over medium heat; cook and stir apple and onion slices until they become tender, which should take approximately 8 minutes.
6
Subsequently, place the cooked apple and onion in casserole dish with sausage.
7
Combine the sausage, apple, and onion together using a gentle stirring motion; season with salt, black pepper, and oregano.
8
Brown flour in the reserved drippings from the skillet over medium heat. Whisk water into flour until a thick gravy forms, which should take around 3 minutes.
9
Pour the prepared gravy over the sausage mixture in the casserole dish; spread mashed potatoes over the top using a spoon, creating peaks.
10
Lightly brush the mashed potatoes with 1 tablespoon of melted margarine.
11
Finally, bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are lightly browned and the sausage mixture is bubbling, which should take approximately 30 minutes.
