Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 3/4 cup butter
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup honey
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, take a 9-inch square baking pan and lightly grease it with butter or cooking spray. Then, dust the pan with flour to prevent sticking.
3
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and grated orange peel. Set this mixture aside for now.
4
In a separate mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together 1/2 cup of unsalted butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until the mixture is light, fluffy, and almost double in volume.
5
Add 2 large eggs to the bowl one at a time, beating well after each addition.
6
In another bowl, whisk together the flour mixture and 1 cup of milk until just combined.
7
Add this mixture to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with the flour mixture until just combined.
8
Finally, stir in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts.
9
Pour the cake batter into your prepared baking pan.
10
Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
11
While you wait for the cake to cool, prepare the honey syrup.
12
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of pure honey, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 1 cup water. Bring this mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
13
Once the syrup is hot, stir in 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Bring this mixture to a boil and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
14
Once the cake has cooled, use a sharp knife to cut it into diamond shapes.
15
Pour the warm honey syrup over the top of each cake shape.
