Homemade Wheat Tortillas
Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1/2 cup water
Instructions
1
Combine the dry ingredients of flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to break down the shortening into the dry ingredients until you achieve a rough, textured consistency similar to coarse cornmeal.
2
Next, add the water and mix until you can gather the dough into a cohesive mass. If the dough proves to be too dry, do not hesitate to add small increments of water (1 teaspoon at a time) until it comes together in a unified whole. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and allow it to relax for 15 minutes.
3
Subsequently, divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each one into a round. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to flatten and stretch out each round into a circular shape measuring 7 inches in diameter.
4
Finally, cook the tortillas on an ungreased skillet over medium-high heat until brown spots begin to appear on their surface. Maintain the tortillas under a clean, dry towel until they are ready to be served.
