  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half cream

Combine granulated sugar, dark cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt in a saucepan.

Add scalding hot water to the mixture and blend until it forms a uniform consistency.

Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly to avoid burning, and cook for 2 minutes.

Stir in milk and continue heating until the mixture reaches a very hot temperature, just shy of boiling point.

Immediately remove from heat; add a few drops of vanilla extract to the mixture.

Pour a generous amount of heavy cream into each mug to lower the temperature of the hot cocoa to a comfortable drinking level.
