  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water

Combine flour, water, sugar, yeast, and salt in a bread machine pan according to the manufacturer's instructions. Choose the Dough cycle option and initiate the Start function.

Simultaneously, prepare a bowl and cookie sheet by spraying them with cooking spray for easy release. Set these aside until needed.

Once the cycle is completed, transfer the dough to a greased bowl and gently rotate it to evenly coat all sides.

Cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise in a warm environment until it has doubled in size, approximately 30 minutes. The dough is ready if it springs back when pressed.

Gently deflate the dough and transfer it to a lightly dusted surface. Roll out into a 16-x12-inch rectangle shape.

Divide the dough in half, creating two 8-x12-inch rectangles. Roll each half tightly into a log shape, starting from the long side and working your way through to eliminate any air pockets as you go. Gently roll back and forth to taper the ends.

Place the rolled loaves 3 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheet. Make deep diagonal cuts across each loaf, spaced every 2 inches or one lengthwise cut per loaf. Cover the loaves and allow them to rise in a warm environment until doubled in size, taking about 30 to 40 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

In a small bowl, whisk together an egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this mixture over the tops of the loaves.

Bake the loaves in the preheated oven until they are golden brown, taking about 20 to 25 minutes.
